Fisheries 2027- towards a contract for the future of marine fisheries
This consultation paper sets out Defra's vision for the fisheries sector in 20 years' time, and is based on the view that Defra feels that throughout the EU too many fish are being caught. This vision includes such things as in 2027 only environmentally acceptable catching, processing and transporting methods will be used. That fish and fish products (including those not for human consumption) will be bought only from sustainably managed stocks or aquaculture operations.
In terms of your responsibilities as fishermen the document sets out a vision that all commercial fishermen, recreational anglers and fish-farmers will become involved in e.g. contributing to data, using appropriate gear and techniques to reduce the environmental impacts of catching fish, being responsive to fish stock and market changes in effort expended and species targeted... the list goes on.
Remember, this is a consultation - the vision has not yet been agreed.
